Third Part · LII. The Apostates

The gods laughed themselves to death

Read in the book →

They did not “begloom” themselves to death—that do people fabricate! On the contrary, they—LAUGHED themselves to death once on a time!

When a jealous old God declared there was only one God, the other gods laughed and said that divinity is precisely that there are gods but no God.

What the critics said

Petty virtue, apostates and the great cityGeorg Brandes · Aristocratic Radicalism, 1889exposition

Brandes summarises Zarathustra's disgust with the petty virtues that make men smaller, his being called godless, the apostasy of his former companions, and his loathing of the great city and of the State.
