First Part · IV. The Despisers of the Body

The creating body made spirit

Read in the book →

To the despisers of the body will I speak a word. That they despise is caused by their esteem. What is it that created esteeming and despising and worth and will?

The creating Self created for itself esteeming and despising, it created for itself joy and woe. The creating body created for itself spirit, as a hand to its will.

Zarathustra asks what created esteeming, despising, worth and will. His answer is that the creating Self and body did so, and made spirit as an instrument.

What the critics said

Little and big sagacity: intellect and instinctAnthony M. Ludovici · Notes on Thus Spake Zarathustra, 1909interpretation

Ludovici says that in 'The Despisers of the Body' Zarathustra calls the intellect the little sagacity and the instincts the big sagacity, endorsing Schopenhauer's view of the intellect as the body's instrument and warning against exalting reason over the instincts.
